In this country, small houses have often gotten a bad reputation. Most home improvement or real estate reality shows put an emphasis on families that are looking to “upgrade” to a bigger home, or are expanding their family and need more space. Smaller homes are viewed as a last resort, only bought because the prospective buyers couldn’t afford something bigger.

However, in recent years, homeowners have been finding that they have more space than they really need. More square footage means spending more money on utilities, taxes, and upkeep. Entire rooms can often go completely unused in some modern American homes. In some cases, homeowners have rooms devoted to just storing their excess “stuff”. If you’re interested in downsizing, you might start by targeting a room or two in your home and purposely finding things to donate or throw away. Of course, it’s up to you to figure out what works best for your family, but these are some things to think about.
